Informational Drug Awareness Discussion Happening This Wednesday

For the past five years, the City of Santa Clarita has hosted a hard-hitting drug awareness program for teens, parents and residents. In 2011, the City began its Heroin Kills program, focusing on the dangers of heroin use. Through the years, the symposiums have covered topics like prescription pills and marijuana.

Still Going Strong

Evelyn Joyce and Richard Ziegenfuss have a lot to teach younger generations about how to succeed at having a long and happy marriage. With 69 years of happily-ever-after to celebrate, they have earned that right. "Remember, there will always be a lot of give and take, understanding, and a lot of love. It's not 50/50, it's 100/100. You both give your all," advises 83 years young Evelyn Joyce.

Picture a Family

Above our kitchen table growing up, there hung a large black and white framed picture of four children sitting on a dilapidated porch eating watermelon. Only one of the boys had shoes on, the eldest boy who gazed boldly at the camera. The other children were barefoot, except for my father who had one shoe on – one shoe with no laces, that is! But nonetheless, his foot was planted firmly in that shoe as he sat munching away on his summer treat. Dad used to laugh and tell us, his four kids, that by the time a pair of shoes ...

Local Girl Scout Volunteers with Indigenous Communities in Costa Rica and Panama

Erin Nahas, a 15-year-old Girl Scout from Castaic, completed the Costa Rica and Panama Service Challenge Destination with Outward Bound Costa Rica. During the 14-day course, Erin contributed to two major service-learning projects and pushed her limits with adventure activities.

Pokémon is Back!

Have you heard about the Pokémon Go app? Everyone is talking about it. People are out in hoards collecting Pokémon characters on their cell phones. But did you know Pokémon collectors have been around for years? I found out about them last week from my grandson. He was so excited when I picked him up from summer camp. "I finally got two Pokémon cards today!" he exclaimed.

Local Robotics Team Returns from Australia with First Place Award

The community robotics team, "Heat It Up and Keep It Cool," won the FIRST Place Inspire Award at the Asia Pacific FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge (FTC) Invitational Championship Tournament. The competition was held at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, from July 15 to 17.

A Day Full of Sports and Fun at the Youth Sports and Healthy Families Festival

Summer is wrapping up, the kids are getting ready to head back to school, but that doesn't mean the fun has to stop! Next Saturday, August 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the City of Santa Clarita will host its annual Youth Sports and Healthy Families Festival. The event will take place at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, located at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway, Santa Clarita.
