Nearly 90 youngsters at Mitchell Elementary School in Canyon Country learned a lesson about city government and politics from a pro recently as Mayor Bob Kellar visited their school. After introducing his topic, the mayor turned the discussion over to Marty Kovacs, a grandfather of some Mitchell Elementary students who invited Kellar to speak. Kovacs touched on important traits students need to have to go into politics, like responsibility and doing the right things as a citizen. Damara Ganyo, a first-grader at Highlands Elementary School in Saugus, gave Felix, her class's stuffed bunny, a tour of the Santa Clarita Valley. One of her stops was at the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival, where Felix got a feel for the Western lifestyle by riding a horse and playing games in the children's area. The students in Mrs. Grossman's class, where Ganyo is a student, take turns bringing Felix home, along with the book, "Letters from Felix." Inside the "Zen Den," Jennifer Ejinduaka was taking a break with a neck and shoulder massage. The Rio Vista Elementary School teacher sat in the padded chair for about 10 minutes as the massage therapist student rubbed the tension from her back. After her massage was done, Ejinduaka, who teaches a second- and third-grade class, had a smile on her face while looking noticeably relaxed. Rio Norte Junior High School eighth-graders had the chance to visit the East Coast on their recent spring break. Students explored New York, Philadelphia, Gettysburg, Mt. Vernon and Washington D.C. with history teacher Ron Ippolito as their director. With Congress in session, the group also had a chance to meet with U.S. Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon. McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, took time to speak with the students and educate them on the responsibilities of Congress and how they could become involved citizens on local and national levels. Since opening its doors in 1996, Stevenson Ranch Elementary School has been named a California Distinguished School three times: In 1998, 2004 and now again in 2008. It was a celebration of poetry as youngsters from Live Oak Elementary School in Castaic took the stage to recite their literary creations. The 6th annual Poetry Night at the Leopard Lounge was part of a week-long effort to have families turn their televisions off and spend time together. Women in history speakers visit Highlands
Abigail Burgess visited Highlands Elementary School recently. Dressed in traditional 1800s-era garb, she shared how she handled the responsibilities of a Maine lighthouse keeper while still a teenager. Of course, the character from history was actually one of several local women who dressed in period attire and told students of their characters' experiences during the school's women in history week. While some may have a general understanding of the Japanese-American internment camps, Jessica Resnick has gained an in-depth knowledge of it. And she has a medal to prove it. The 11-year-old from Castaic recently won at an LA-wide competition for her video project on Fred Korematsu, a Japanese-American who evaded an internment camp. His ultimate capture and subsequent court battles became anexample of the how Japanese-Americans were treated during World War II. Emblem raises money for cystic fibrosis
When the students of Emblem Elementary School decided to take on a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, they set an ambitious goal to raise $1,000 collectively. After a week of collecting change and asking for donations, the roughly 230 students realized that they not only met their initial goal, they had tripled it with a grand total of $3,144.09. BJ's Restaurant also donated $2,000 to the foundation and awarded $1,000 to the Saugus school for its fundraising efforts. Standing next to dog cages at the Castaic Animal Shelter, the group of Girl Scouts was about to realize the impact they had made by collecting blankets and towels from the community. After a tour of the shelter, the 12 girls from Troop 512 met with a couple of puppies getting comfortable on the big bundle of donated blankets. The hope was that the linens placed inside the cages of the Castaic shelter would prevent the dogs from sleeping on the cold, hard cement floors every night. Hart, Henry Mayo Newhall and even notorious outlaw Tiburcio Vasquez.
